The Pratersauna tasked us with creating an eye-catching light installation for their garden area during the Prater Unser Festival. Sacrilege is an important concept to that festival, so we decided to create a sacrilegious monument as well: The Great Beer Cross, named so for it’s building material, beer crates. We put the beer cross through 5 days of operation, developing new content each day. This was also the first project we incorporated mobile development into as well, creating an interface to control the lighting via an iPhone.

Technical Details

The entire cross is lit by 32 RGB clusters placed a the base of each beer crate. The clusters are controlled by DMX dimmers and an Artnet node. The content is generated by a custom Max/MSP patch which generates DMX values.

Mobile integration was introduced using Lemur, which sends OSC data directly to our Max/MSP patch.
